How to Choose a Suitable Coaxial Connector

When we choose RF coaxial connectors, we must strike a balance between product performance and cost. When talking about performance, the very first thing is to match the system electrical equipment. In terms of price, it should conform to the value engineering(VE). Following are four points to be considered when making rg402.

 

a) Connector interface (SMA, SMB, BNC, etc.)

b) Electrical performance, installation and cables

c) Butt joint (PCB board, cable, panel, etc.)

d) Mechanical structure and coating (military and commercial)

 

1. Connector interface

Determined by its application, it must meet the electrical and mechanical performance requirements rg402.

BNC connector adopts bayonet connection, which is wildly used for rg405 radio frequency signal connection with frequency lower than 4GHz, network system, instrumentation and computer interconnection.

Except for the threaded connection, the interface of TNC connector is similar to that of BNC connector, which has excellent rg402 performance in vibration with the property to work at 11GHz.

 

SMA connector  threaded connectors are widely used in military and civil industries such as aviation, radar, microwave communications, digital communications. Its impedance is rg405, the frequency is below 12.4GHz when connecting with flexible cable and no more than 26.5GHz with semi-rigid cable.

 

SMB coaxial connector is smaller than SMA coaxial

Connector with a plug-in structure for quick connection. Used in digital communication, It is a replacement product of L9. The frequency can be 4GHz with 50Ω impedance and 2GHz with 75Ω impedance.

SMC is similar to SMB. Because of the mechanical performance and a wider frequency range ensured by the rg405, it is mainly used in military or high-vibration environments.

The N-type threaded connector rg402 is cheaper with air as an insulating material. The impedance can be 50Ω or 75Ω.The frequency can reach up to 11GHz. It is commonly used in regional networks, media and test instruments.

MCX connectors are small and safe. They are preferred in narrow spaces inside the equipment and enjoy a bright prospects in post and telecommunications.

2. Electrical performance, installation and cables

(1) Impedance

The coaxial connector should match the impedance of the system and the cable. It should be rg405 that not all connector interfaces meet the impedance of 50Ω or 75Ω. Impedance mismatch will degrade system performance.

(2) Voltage

The rg402 mustn’t exceeds the maximum withstand value of the connector in operation.

(3) Maximum operating frequency

Every coaxial connector interface is designed with a maximum frequency limit. Some commercial connectors are made with a 75-Ω minimum frequency limit. In addition to the rg405, each type of connector has its own advantage. For example, BNC is a bayonet connection, which is convenient and cheap, making it widely used in low-performance electrical connections. rg402 and TNC connectors are designed threaded to work in high-vibration environments. SMB connector can connect and disconnect swiftly which brings it a high popularity in market.
